Partnership With A Purpose - 2019 Sea Otter Classic

March 22, 2019

Together, we can strive to be more sustainable.

We’ve partnered with The Renewal Workshop to repair and refurbish warranty returns through CircleBack, to give gently used products a second life instead of adding to landfills. And you are a key part of this cycle!

CircleBack is the first certified circular consumer program where all items are going to a fully zero-waste system. Recovering more value for something that has already been created serves riders, partners, and our planet.

Consider your riding apparel drawer for a moment. Do you have a few pieces in there that don’t get the opportunity to join you on a ride anymore but are fully functional just not in your kit rotation? Maybe you’ve been riding so much you’ve lost weight and are wearing a smaller size or you’ve switched from one discipline to another. Whatever the reason, you can give that gear a second life and allow someone else to leverage the benefits of quality PEARL iZUMi apparel while minimizing the impact on our world.

Even if there are minor repairs needed to make it fully functional again, we can take care of it to be Renewed for someone else to use on their rides. For the items that are beyond repair or are just a little too experienced, The Renewal Workshop will find ways to recycle materials to keep them out of the landfill.

Now you’re asking, how can I take part? If you’ve got something that fits the bill, come visit us at our Sea Otter Classic booth April 11-14! You can contribute your lightly worn gear and learn more about our partnership with The Renewal Workshop and what we’ve been working on. We’ll also have some of our athletes there to chat with and learn more about riding, in addition to special prizes, contests, and some fun.

We’re sure there are some of you who won’t be able to make it to California and still want to take part in CircleBack. You can send your items to our headquarters and we’ll get the process started with The Renewal Workshop to get those items cleaned, restored and available for other riders.

Our partnership with The Renewal Workshop is part of our Social Purpose initiatives to make a better future for future generations.

Because we believe how we live shapes how future generations ride, we pledge to use our business practices, products and advocacy to reduce consumption of oil – and embolden all of us to

ride more, do more.

It’s a big event with lots of things happening, so feel free to come by our booth R8 (right next to the Shimano tent) and take a break. We’ll have some fun and games for you to win some prizes or just get some refreshment under a nice tent with a picnic table to take a break during the show. Let’s hope it’s sunny and nice again this year!

Stop by and meet a few PEARL iZUMi athletes as well, including Jeff Lenowsky, Syd & Macky, Dillon Caldwell, and members of our Ambassador Crew Amalia Miller, Randy Barcena, and Brandon Scales.

For live updates follow us over on Instagram and watch our Stories!! You never know what might pop up if you’re at the event.

We’ll update this post after the Sea Otter Classic to find out how much we were able to keep out of the landfill and back out on the bike, plus we will share some photos and news and other reflections of what has become the biggest cycling industry event in North America. Be sure to check back the week of April 15th.

SEA OTTER UPDATE

The PEARL iZUMi Crew representing at the 2019 Sea Otter Classic.

We had tons of people come to the booth and learn more about our partnership with The Renewal Workshop. Over the four days of offering apparel nearly a quarter of the sales were renewed pieces rather than new from the factory. Making a smaller impact all around.

And many of the other sales were attributed to folks surrendering some older apparel to get something new. We’ve sent on the box of over twenty pounds of used gear to The Renewal Workshop to determine what can be renewed and what will be converted into something else instead of filling up the local dump.

Overall, the long weekend was a big success in sharing this exciting partnership and we’re looking forward to making bigger strides to allow more riders the opportunity to give their lightly used apparel a second life with other cycling enthusiasts.
